Mezic brothers Rick and Anthony are using their exquisite knowledge in the fishing industry to deliver fresh and frozen seafood across southern and eastern Australia, how and when suppliers want it. The brothers, who are also fishermen themselves, know exactly what seafood businesses are looking for when it comes to transport and are making sure they can offer a service that caters to their needs.
“With over thirty years’ experience in our family fishing business, we believe we know how to provide the service our clients demand to present the highest quality of their product,” Rick said.
With five prime movers in the fleet Rick and Anthony take pride in being big enough to handle your fish but also small enough to take care of it – thereby providing the individual service customers require.
For their comprehension in the fishing industry, they pay tribute to their father – the late Joe Mezic, who was a part of South Australia’s pioneering fishermen and helped create the Spencer Gulf Prawn Fishery.
Rick and Anthony eagerly embraced their dad’s passion for a life on the sea and each started their careers as deckhands. Rick skippered the FV Jadran for 20 years, stepping down to allow Anthony to take the reins.
Rick continued to immerse his knowledge in the seafood industry by working for Australian Bight Seafood, and as Adelaide Marketing Manager for SA Prawn Cooperative, guiding the co-op into establishing a successful base at the Safcol Fish Market which continues today.
Although Anthony has remained the skipper on the family boat, he enjoys the diversity and the challenge of further building a business directly related to seafood.
“As new owners and operators, we saw a niche in the market for personalised service at a high standard, something we wanted for ourselves,” Anthony said
Seafood is collected from Port Lincoln, Little Douglas, Coffin Bay, Cowell, Whyalla, Pt Pirie, Pt Broughton and Wallaroo, and delivered to Adelaide’s Safcol Fish Market and twice weekly to the Sydney Fish Market.
Short-term plans include increasing current deliveries to Melbourne Seafood Centre and to increase runs to and from Port Lincoln. With these extra runs across the borders the brothers will focus on closing the current time gap in Port Lincoln to better service oyster and mussel growers, alongside existing clients, and expand to the growing oyster trade in the Brisbane market.
This will enable regional growers and fishers to provide more consistency and the freshness of produce will be better than ever before.
The bond with Port Lincoln and the surrounding community is where it all started for their dad and the brothers’ future plan is to grow and employ more local people – an investment for both their business and local families.
“We have taken over an established family transport business previously trading as Stevron Refrigerated Transport and branded it to specifically promote SA seafood, a product and a future we believe provides exceptional quality and variety,” Rick said.
“We are excited about our future prospects and we look forward to showcasing South Australia’s prized catch to fish merchants and markets alike from the West Coast to the east.”
